Accessibility at Viewfield

At Viewfield Baptist Church, we want to make our services, activities and buildings as accessible as possible.

Parking

We have a small car park which is accessed via Viewfield Terrace. The car park includes two Blue Badge parking bays which have additional width.

Our car park is available for use by those on the church premises at the following times:

Mondays: all day

Tuesdays: all day

Wednesdays: after 4pm

Thursdays: after 4pm

Fridays: after 2pm

Saturdays: all day

Sundays: all day

We request that on a Sunday morning, cars parking in the church car park should only be those travelling with a Blue Badge holder or drivers with significant mobility issues. Anyone may use the car park to drop off passengers at the door to the church and then park in an alternative location.

Further parking is available in the Fife Council operated car park on Viewfield Terrace. Charges apply here Monday to Saturday between 9am and 6pm and on a Sunday from 1pm.

Approach to site

The main building of Viewfield Baptist Church can be accessed via front doors on East Port. There are five steps from street level to door, and additionally a ramp to the side of the steps. The main building can also be entered at its lowest level, accessed via Viewfield Terrace through the church car park. This entrance is flat with no steps.

The Viewfield Centre (2 Viewfield Terrace) is situated on Viewfield Terrace and is accessed via a small ramp.

The Garage is accessed from the church car park via a ramp.

Please note that the pavement down Viewfield Terrace includes a cobbled area at the entrance to our car park. Access to The Garage and the lower entrance of the main building involves crossing the cobbled area.

Step-free access

All buildings can be entered via ramps or flat entrances.

Main Building

The main building has a lift which allows movement between the lowest floor at the car park level (Level -2), the mezzanine level (Level -1) and the ground floor (Level 0) at East Port level. This gives step-free access to the majority of the building – including the Church Hall and gents’ toilets (Level -2), accessible toilet with baby changing table (Level -1) and Main Sanctuary, ladies’ toilets, accessible toilet with paediatric changing table, tea bar and Sun Room (Level 0).

There are four rooms which can only be accessed by steps:

Room 1 and the Vestry (used by Acorns, our group for 2 to 4 ½ year olds).

The Flower Room (used for storage) and the Counting Room (used as a meeting space).

There is a balcony in the Sanctuary which is only accessible via a stair case.

The Garage

The Garage is on one floor with no steps.

The Viewfield Centre

The ground floor of the Viewfield Centre has no steps. This includes the Church Office, Canmore, kitchen, Abbey (Quiet Room), Forth (Prayer Room). Along a short, sloped corridor there are the ladies’ and gents’ toilets, a larger toilet (includes grab rails but not full specification for accessible toilet), and Bruce.

The second floor of the Viewfield Centre can only be accessed by stairs, and includes Staff Offices, Carnegie, Elgin and Transy.

 Sunday Services

Seating

Seating is made up of comfortable chairs with and without arms (seating in the balcony is wooden pews).

We have an area of seating reserved for wheelchair users and their carers/companions which is situated immediately as you enter the sanctuary. Our stewards are very happy to remove a chair from another row if you would prefer to sit elsewhere, please just ask.

Induction Loop

We have an induction loop in the Sanctuary, please switch your hearing aid to the T position.

Song Sheet

All our song words are projected on screens. If you would prefer to use a song sheet, you can pick one of these up from the Tea Bar in the entrance, or ask one of the stewards for a copy.

Communion

For communion we use non-alcoholic wine, served in individual cups. The bread is cut into individual pieces and there are gluten free wafers available from a small dish on each plate.

Order of service

The order of service is printed on the front of our weekly bulletin. This is available from the stewards as you enter the sanctuary. Large print versions can be collected from the Tea Bar or by asking a steward. The bulletin is also available digitally on our website.

Children & Babies

Everyone joins together in the Sanctuary for the first part of the morning service. At the back of the Sanctuary there is an area with mats and some toys, aimed at children under 3. Families are welcome to sit here, for their children to play and space to keep buggies/prams. After the children have gone out to their groups, the mats and toys are put away. Please note that during the final song of the service, these chairs are stacked so allow the set-up of the refreshments table.

We have groups for children from 0 to S4 during the service most weeks. For more information, click here.

Baby/child changing facilities can be found in the following places:

-              Paediatric changing table inside the Accessible Toilet on Level 0 (Sanctuary level)

-              Baby changing table inside larger cubicle in Ladies’ Toilets on Level 0 (Sanctuary level)

-              Baby changing table inside the Accessible Toilet on Level -1 (Mezzanine level)

Adults with learning disabilities

On the first Sunday of the month, we have a group called SHAPES which is for adults with learning disabilities.  The group meets to learn more about Jesus together by singing, praying, reading from the Bible, doing some activities related to the story and sharing a cup of tea or coffee.
